Peter H. Schrader Construction Industry Scholarship

scholarship_awardPeter H. Schrader, our founder and CEO, was educated in Scotia- Glenville schools, graduating from Scotia-Glenville High School before going on to pursue higher education. Peter went on to college, leaving early to serve his country in the Navy. Once Peter had completed his service to the Navy, he returned to Glenville to start working in construction with his brother. At Schrader & Company we are deeply committed to supporting the future of our industry. We have set up the Peter H. Schrader Construction Industry Scholarship to help a high school senior from Scotia-Glenville High School who wishes to pursue a career in construction or related field. The recipient of the $500 scholarship will be chosen by the High School Scholarship committee headed by the Principal.

Trend Alert – Deconstruction Chic

Everybody knows that the best part of a remodeling job is when you are right in the thick of it. The sounds of machines humming, dust particles floating in the air, and let’s not forget that elegant yet understated plastic wrap. It’s almost a shame that the job will eventually have to end.

Well here’s a heads up, it doesn’t have to!

One of the latest home trends of 2016 is deconstruction chic. Celebrities have been flocking in droves to their home stylists in order to get in on this trend. Decon chic isn’t just for the rich and famous, almost everyone is embracing this new look.

You’ll never run out of things to do in a decon chic home

Empty-nesters have really caught the deconstruction bug. “It saved my marriage” exclaimed Marge S. when she was asked about her decision to try out deconstruction chic.” It seemed like it took forever for our three kids to finally leave the nest, but once they did, we didn’t know what to do with ourselves…it was so quiet and clean. De-conning our kitchen and dining room has brought life and dirt back into our home”. The perpetual dust and debris that comes with deconstruction is great for those who love to clean, or just have too much time on their hands.

Others just find the trend to be fun and inspiring. Susie DeLa- Casa, a homeowner who has recently redecorated her kitchen, says that deconstruction chic has given her countless hours of dreaming about her kitchen’s full potential. “Paint samples, floor plans, cabinets! I love spending time in my decon-chic kitchen playing around with different combinations. I’ve been inviting some of my girlfriends over for a weekly wine and design night.

At it’s very core deconstruction chic is about authenticity. The stripped down walls of your home allow you to see your home’s true beauty and potential. Some have even remarked that by incorporating deconstruction chic into their homes, that they have become more open with themselves and those around them.

Try it out

Start small, perhaps removes a few feet of drywall in your living room, or pull up a section of tile in your kitchen, the more heavily trafficked an area the better – It may seem inconvenient but it gives you the added benefit of making you more mindful of your surroundings.

What are you waiting for? Go out there and knock some walls down!

High Tech Bathroom Features

Over the past few years we’ve seen home automation become more and more popular. You can turn on lights in your household, adjust the thermostat bathroom, even lock and unlock your home all from your smartphone. The bathroom is no exception to this new trend, we’re going to share with you just a few of these high tech features that you can add to your bathroom.

Automated Toilets

At first you might think “Why does my toilet need to be smart?” after all it is just a toilet, right? Well yes, and no. The smart toilets of today have something for everyone. If you are looking for an environmentally friendly option the Kohler NUMI has an automatic flush system that offers excellent water and power savings. Are you looking for a little sanctuary in your home? This toilet has a heated seat and foot warmers, is capable of playing FM radio, streaming from bluetooth enabled devices or from an SD card. This toilet has illuminated panels that you can set for a little ambiance, because why not? To top it all off you’ll never have to raise or lower the toilet seat by hand again. Even without all the bells and whistles this toilet compact and has great clean modern lines, a welcome addition to any bathroom.

Touch Free Faucets

If fancy toilets aren’t your thing perhaps you would be more interested in touch-free faucets. Public restrooms have had these for quite some time now and they are making their way into homes everywhere. Touch free faucets are a great option for those with arthritis or perpetually full hands. Touch free faucets come in a variety of finishes and styles to complement your home’s style

Programmable Showers & Tubs

At the touch of a button you can load your personal preferences -heat, water pressure ect. Some programmable systems even allow you to load up your playlists for a great personalized bathing experience.

Warming Drawers

The folks of Dacor transformed their kitchen warming drawer into something that will withstand the humidity of the bathroom and keep your towels toasty warm. These cabinets come in a variety of styles to fit seamlessly into your bathroom.

So what do you think? Automated toilets might not be for everyone, but those heated towel drawers sound great!

Timeless Kitchen Trends

A post on Better Homes and Gardens caught our attention and we thought we’d throw in our two cents. The topic- timeless kitchen trends, it almost sounds like an oxymoron, but they can indeed exist. Now, we don’t agree with every trend mentioned in the BHG blog, but we did sort out our top 6 timeless kitchen trends from their list.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel has been around so long can it even be considered a trend? We know that not everyone is a fan of this kind of finish, but it doesn’t look like it is going to go away anytime soon. Stainless steel offers a sleek and modern look to any kitchen.

Big Drawers

We wrote about these before, and we are still in love with big drawers. Why go searching through cabinets for your cookware when you can pull out a nice big drawer and have whatever you need right at your fingertips?

Open Shelving

Open shelving will give your kitchen a bright and airy feel. Similar to big drawers, open shelving allows you to see exactly what you have on hand and allows you to play with your storage space, something that can’t really be said of traditional closed cabinets.

Open Layouts

Formal kitchens and dining rooms are not really all that in demand, open layouts are where it’s at. The kitchen is no longer just another room in your house, it is an integral part of your living space that is cozy and fosters togetherness.

LED Lighting

When LED lighting first came around there was much to be desired. The light given off was cold, and there were only a few different options for homeowners. Now LED lighting has much more to offer consumers, both in style and long term value.

About Toys for Tots:

MISSION:
The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

GOAL:
The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at Christmas, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens.

OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of Toys for Tots are to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.

ACTIVITIES:
The principal Toys for Tots activity which takes place each year is the collection and distribution of toys in the communities in which a Marine Corps Reserve Unit is located. In communities without a Reserve Unit, the campaign can be conducted by a Marine Corps League Detachment or group of men and women, generally veteran Marines, authorized by Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to conduct a local Toys for Tots campaign. Local Toys for Tots Campaign Coordinators conduct an array of activities throughout the year, which include golf tournaments, foot races, bicycle races and other voluntary events designed to increase interest in Toys for Tots, and concurrently generate toys and monetary donations.

Schrader and Company Construction Services Featured in Cabin Life Magazine

Burnt Hills, NY – January 2015

The cover story of the February 2015 issue of Cabin Life Magazine highlights the 2009 construction of a beloved family cabin located on the western shores of Lake George.

The feature, titled “Capturing Days Gone By”, tells the story of Jeff and Patti Broyzna and the Broyzna clan’s long history of summers spent with family in Bolton, NY since the 1930s. A cabin constructed in 1946 remained a destination spot for six generations of the Broyzna family, but in 2009 owners Jeff and Patti realized extensive repairs were needed. They turned to Schrader and Company and architecture firm Architex to lovingly tear down and then reconstruct a rustic but energy-efficient cabin in this sacred place in their family’s history.

The stunning results are featured in their full-color glory in the article, alongside family photos, blueprints highlighting modernizations and improvements, and even a cherished Broyzna family recipe.

The article is a fascinating and insightful glimpse into the hard work and logistics involved in such a nuanced project; one where concerns of nature, construction, design, historical accuracy, and deep family emotional ties must all be considered and blended seamlessly to achieve success. That hard work paid off, in both the owner’s obvious pride and delight in their new cabin, and in accolades. The project won the Capital Region Builders and Remodelers Association award for “Coolest Project” in 2013.

To purchase a digital or print copy of Cabin Life Magazine for the full in-depth feature on the cabin project, visit www.cabinlife.com.
