Schrader and Company Construction Services Partners with Union College MBA Program

schrader-capstoneBurnt Hills, NY – March 2014

Schrader and Company Construction Services kicked off 2014 in an exciting partnership with students from Union College’s Masters of Business Administration Program. Three MBA candidates in their final course of study have spent the past ten weeks collaborating with Schrader and Company’s leaders to develop a business plan as part of the students’ Capstone course.

The purpose of the Capstone course is to integrate the knowledge that students have acquired throughout their MBA study and apply it to a real company. Lindsey Marquard, Ashley Braniecki, and Magen Renadette have met weekly with Schrader and Company leaders to carefully evaluate current company practices and develop a detailed future business plan. This symbiotic relationship benefits both parties.

“Our goal in participating in this program is to grow and strengthen our company as well as continue to build relationships with the future business leaders in our community,” said Schrader and Company President Ben Cangeleri. “What we can offer is an intimate experience of the unique challenges and benefits of small business operations, and we hope the students have learned
as much from us as we have learned from them.”

“We are grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Peter, Christy, Silas, and Ben. The experience has allowed us to gain insight, firsthand, into the inner workings of their business,
and to put to practice the skills we have developed throughout our studies,” said Ashley Braniecki.

Participation in the Capstone course is just one forward-thinking measure implemented by Schrader and Company in the wake of their 40th anniversary and the rise of new leadership. Recent developments include updating the company’s name and logo, adding to the talented field team of professional craftsmen, and implementing Computer Aided Design into project planning.

“The Capstone program offered us a great opportunity to be reflective about our future goals and to take a metaphorical step back from the busy day-to-day operations and think about the big picture”, said Vice-President Silas Schrader. “It’s been a very rewarding experience.”

The Test of Time

In the post you will find a message, we could refer to it as a “reprint” as it was written for and first appeared in our annual photo journal. This photo journal, dubbed “Year in Review”, houses images captured at random of many of the building activities taking place on a variety of our projects during a calendar year. After we pull them all together we present a finished album as a gift to each employee at year end. For me, this is much more than a gift of photos. This is about taking custody of our memories. Each yearly collection is somewhat exclusive, having its own story or stories to tell. By composition they provide an enjoyable pictorial account for our viewing pleasure today. For our tomorrows, they will be the chronicler providing the effective link from the trade professional to his past desired and pleasant memories. How wonderful it will be when that day comes and an adoring grandchild might ask “tell me what you did when you worked grandpa”, and Grandpa may respond “I built things to last. Here, let me show you some examples in these photos”. Having earned the distinction of mentor, or more precisely “oldest of the old” at Schrader and Company, I can now validate from personal experience the perception that time seems to pass more and more quickly for an individual as that individual continues to age. As each of us continue to make our own new memories we would be wise to consider “now” as a good time to verify access in the future to the memories we wish to preserve.
Back from our memories… we were calling your attention to our “reprint” through which we willingly expose a sensitive appreciation for the integrity with which our focused experts apply their skill and experience. And this is the case even when no one is observing. Admittedly, we also work in a world of one-of-a-kind design and promised deadlines just as much as noisy power saws, drills, pneumatic rapid firing nail guns, lifting and securing heavy building components, temperature extremes, and dust, jack hammers, banged thumbs, bruises, cuts… and stitches. Yes, we’re the ones who invade your homes. What we do can be incredibly invasive, we know that, and we strive to make the process as pleasant for you as it can possibly be. We dedicate our concentration as much to effective communication and job cleanliness as we do to the artistry of sturdy workmanship. So savor this opportunity as we present you with a glimpse behind our curtain. Take a look to experience how we communicate when we think no one is listening. It may be reassuring for you to discover the depth of our sense of duty and commitment to you, our client, especially when the camera is thought to be “off”.

The Test of Time
It would be far too easy for us to simply fail to remember the unmistakably beneficial impact our work output has on our clients and their families. After all, our work obligations and responsibilities can seem endless at times. We work tirelessly, every day applying our best efforts to the planning, building, and processing of our creations. This we do willingly, dare we say habitually, to ensure that our clients will have the highest probability of being unconditionally satisfied as a direct and memorable result of their experience of working with our company.
Conventional thinking in our industry believes that the conclusion of our work is a time of ending, a time to close our commitments. We see it differently, not as an end but more as a shift, a very critical shift, to when the value of the services we provide really start to show. After we conclude our work and move on to the next project, no longer encumbering a newly finished space with our presence, our clients realize they are free to pursue new comforts enjoying our most recent work. And our work is sound. A new lifestyle is born. Family memories begin anew, taking form during cooking and mealtime activities in that remodeled kitchen. Perhaps those are “Schrader Built” cabinets in that master bedroom addition. Bedtime stories are read to the little ones in a newly constructed third bedroom we created from a framed in over-sized attic space. And yes, undoubtedly there will be magazines and newspapers offering comfort to those who visit a bathroom we recently remodeled. Yes, we enhance lifestyles.
You are a part of something special. By applying your considerable talents in earnest to improve the quality of life of those we labor for, the good you do for others is far-reaching. As you consider your chosen career with Schrader and Company, do so with a well-deserved glow of pride knowing the quality of the work effort devoted to these projects will stand the test of time and have immeasurable lasting impact on those who enjoy them long after our work is complete.

Schrader and Company Construction Services Celebrates 40 Years of Success

schrader-40A look back at four decades of achievement for a company built by dedicated employees

Burnt Hills, NY – September 2013

Founded  by  Peter  Schrader  and  his  wife  Christy in  1973, Schrader  and  Company will  commemorate  forty  years  of success  this  October. The talented  people  who comprise this nationally  recognized  remodeling  and  construction firm  pause  for  a  moment  of  reflection  and  celebration  as they prepare to step confidently into the future.

Things have changed markedly since the advent of the company in 1973 when it was Peter who could be seen working alone on job sites, pulling nights, holidays and weekends in order to build his reputation for fairness and excellent work. The demand for the type of building services he provided would continue to increase through the years, and he would respond by adding staff with the appropriate skill sets.

A certain type of individual has always been attracted to Peter’s company, to the same demanding exactness he believes in, and answerable to strict yet fair and consistent standards. These are sincere people; truthful, trustworthy, and of good character. This was how Peter built a great company – with exceptional people. Over the following decades, the company grew, one good person at a time, and the Schrader name became synonymous with superior craftsmanship and customer satisfaction. Focused strategically on remodeling and custom cabinetry, the business grew in scale and numbers.

Appreciation for their efforts yielded great results, and “Schrader” has become a household name in the capital region, and enjoyed national recognition and awards. When asked how it feels to watch his self-started company reach this significant benchmark, Peter Schrader had this to say: “To have been successful for a forty year run confirms for me that we used more good judgment than bad, that we were spot on with both our day to day and with our long range operating philosophies, and that we did the right thing by conducting our business in a fair and honest manner with every single person we worked with and for. And that I can tell you feels good, real good.” Peter credits much of his personal success to the love and support of his family, most especially his wife and partner, Christy. “My part in the success of the business is quite simple,” he said. ”I was persistent to a fault, determined beyond common sense, over adventurous, lucky, and I was having fun.”

Schrader and Company, Inc. Wins Big at the “Best in Building” Awards

CRBRA-awardThe company takes home seven accolades at the First Annual Capital Region Builders and Remodelers Association’s Best in Building Awards

Burnt Hills, NY – June 2013

Schrader and Company, Inc. had big reasons to celebrate this past month when the business received seven awards from the Capital Region Builders and Remodelers Association’s (CRBRA) Best in Building Awards.

These first ever Best in Building Awards were judged by a committee of non-local judges, which ensured that each nominee’s work would be considered without fear of bias or local business connection.

Schrader and Company, Inc. took home awards in the following categories:

  • Best Bath Remodel under $40,000
  • Best Bath Remodel over $40,000
  • Best Kitchen Remodel under $75,000
  • Best Collateral Package (Remodeler)
  • Best Website (Remodeler)
  • Coolest Project
  • Best Use of Social Media (Remodeler) (Tied)

Director of Planning Brian Taber was one of several Schrader and Company employees on hand at the new Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center at RPI in Troy to accept the awards.

“It’s wonderful to be recognized for our efforts. Each one of us believes so strongly in the quality of the work that we do, and in our company-wide goal to keep delivering excellent results to our clients. To be judged as the best in these categories is immensely gratifying, and hugely motivating as we look to future projects.” Taber said.

These acknowledgements come at an auspicious moment for Schrader and Company, Inc., as they celebrate exciting changes in leadership and the 40th anniversary of the founding of the business by Peter and Christy Schrader. New company president and youngest-ever CRBRA president Ben Cangeleri was also named as one of The Albany Business Reviews “Top 40 Under 40” this year.

Planely Speaking

Several concurring influences are presently impacting our lives at Schrader and Company and doing so in a very
nice way. They are clearly connected to the fullness of our commitment to career, community, and country. We
make no secret of the “all‐in” intensity with which we apply ourselves to the planning phase and then to the
constructing phase of the projects we undertake. Permit me to comment on the attractiveness and lasting value of
the work our people produce. It is distinct, often recognized and admired by others, yet rarely equaled. We are
very open about why we believe this is so, it is this “fullness of our commitment “ I mention above. Yes, we are
committed to doing great work and to honest business practices, and that is as it should be. But for today, I make
reference to a broader view of our commitments. This is notable news, timely, and worth sharing.
Ben, our company president, is the recently installed 2013 President of the Capital Region Building and
Remodeling Association (CRBRA). Through recent years Ben has been active on a variety of committees, chair of
the Remodeler’s Council, a vice president, and a member of the board. Observing Ben’s selfless commitment has
special meaning to me. My own volunteer efforts began in the 1970’s when serving on the local builder
association’s board, and eventually as their president in 1985. Ben is now the third individual from Schrader and
Company to commit to this level of leadership responsibility. He follows Margie Miller, an employee of ours at the
time and the association president in 2005, who also has the distinction of being the first female president.
Significant to me personally was being asked to officiate at the formal installation for each (in 2005 and again in
2013). The honor that was mine on these two occasions, and now the memories, will forever be among the dearest
to me.
(An email came across my desk the morning following Ben’s installation that said “….we are so very pleased with
Ben as our president. Schrader and Company knows how to make great Presidents. Silas watch out!”)
Schrader and Company is a Veteran owned company. My service in the military was during the Vietnam War as
an equipment operator in the U.S. Navy Seabees. I was deployed to Vietnam in 1968 and 1969, and honorably
discharged July 1970. My oldest son, Silas, is our company vice president. Silas was recently promoted to Major,
U.S. Marine Corps, and is a veteran of the Iraq War, having served two tours.
The month of October will mark 40 years of Schrader and Company conducting the business of building. That
time span is worthy of some comment and for establishing perspective. Our company president, Ben, had not been
born yet when this company began. John Hudson was the winner of the pool guessing the birth weight of Silas.
Silas is now our company vice president. Both John, a 35 year employee, and Silas are full time employees of our
company. I remember hiring Robert on the day he finished high school. Robert is now a grandfather. He is also a
full time 36 year employee of our company who manages the production of the cabinet shop.
Being able to share our good news with you means a lot to us, especially because news of substance doesn’t just
happen, it requires something akin to this “fullness of our commitment”. In describing this commitment more
precisely I would say we clearly do not fear nor withdraw from hard work, actually we embrace it. I would add we
have proven to ourselves that it makes far more sense to work smart while working hard and therefore have
committed ourselves to nothing less. And finally, it is precisely when we unleash the ferocity of our passion and
direct it to our daily labors that, well, let’s just say this is when the magic really takes over.
As I close I am left with just one unsettled bit of news …. is it, can it, really be 40 years…. already….

Schrader and Company, Inc. Announces Succession of Ownership

schrader-familyPeter Schrader looks forward to a unified transition as the next generation takes up the mantle of forty years of excellence in home remodeling.

Burnt Hills, NY – March 2013

Founded by Peter Schrader and his wife Christy in 1973, Schrader and Company, Incorporated is pleased to announce new ownership, under the direction of President Ben Cangeleri and Vice-President Silas Schrader. Schrader and Company is proud of its distinction as a second generation veteran-owned business. Peter served as a Navy Seabee in Vietnam in 1968/1969 and Silas served with the Marines in Iraq in 2004 and 2005.

The core values that have made Schrader and Company an award-winning household name in the greater Capital Region for the past forty years — quality of craftsmanship, exceptional customer
service, professionalism, and integrity—will carry them into the next phase of their development.  When looking for the right personalities to take over the business that he so meticulously built over the decades, Peter cast a wide net, but had to look no further than the talents within his own company and family. Ben Cangeleri has been with Schrader and Company since 2004 and was recently named as the youngest ever President of the Capital Region Builder’s and Remodelers Association. Major Silas Schrader grew up in and around the business, knowing the employees as well as his own family. After serving an honorable professional career in the armed forces, he returned in 2009 thrilled to be at the helm of the company that has shaped his family’s life and livelihood.

Both Ben and Silas are graduates of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Ben looks forward to leading the company to new and exciting ventures, while maintaining the reputation for
excellence that defines the Schrader and Company experience. Nothing is more important to the employees of Schrader and Company than delivering the best in quality home improvement to the point of complete customer satisfaction. Silas plans to continue the proud Schrader tradition of earning clients for life. Multiple generations of Capital Region homeowners continually turn to them to beautify and protect their life’s greatest financial investment, and all of the people at Schrader and Company take that privilege and honor very seriously.

Silas Schrader, Peter Schrader, Christy Schrader, Ben Cangeleri Schrader and Company believes in giving their employees, who average a tenure of eighteen years, autonomy with accountability, letting their talents flourish in an atmosphere of pride and responsibility. It is within this environment of professionalism that the very best in home remodeling and cabinetmaking occur year after year, resulting in the trust and loyalty of customers throughout the region.

As Peter Schrader reflects on the past four decades of relationships built, goals achieved, milestones met, and now stepping into the role of mentor, he is pleased as he looks to the new leaders of the company.

Peter and Christy Schrader have no reservations and absolute confidence in Ben and Silas as they pilot a company that will still bear their name. For them, there is no greater stake than that, and no greater reward than to watch as Schrader and Company, Inc. moves into its bright future as the industry leader in home renovation.

Schrader and Company, Inc.: Proud to Be a Veteran-Owned Business

father-and-sonFather and son reflect on a legacy of service to their nation and community

Burnt Hills, NY – March 2013

Founded by veteran Peter Schrader and his wife Christy in 1973, Schrader and Company, Incorporated is pleased to announce new ownership, under the direction of President Ben Cangeleri and Vice-President Major Silas Schrader, a Marine reservist. Schrader and Company is proud of its distinction as a veteran-owned business.

Commitment to their country is a Schrader family legacy. Peter Schrader enlisted in the United States Navy Seabees in 1968, served in Vietnam in 1968 and 1969, at Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, Puerto Rico in 1970, and was honorably discharged July 1970.

As Peter and Christy built Schrader and Company, Inc. into an award-winning household name in the Capital Region over the years and subsequently raised their family, they had always hoped to be able to pass along the business to the next generation. More importantly, they wanted to encourage their three children to explore any career path of their choosing. With that crucial parental support and lack of pressure, Silas enrolled in Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  After research and reflection, Silas chose to join the Marines, wanting to experience the very best in leadership training, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in 2002.

Silas was deployed twice to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom, in 2004 and again in 2005 with 3d Battalion, 1st Marines. He was again deployed to Norway for Operation Cold Response with Fox Company, 2d Battalion, 25th Marines in 2010. Silas was promoted to Major in February of 2013.

Throughout their childhoods, the Schrader children were staples in the offices of their parents’ business. Eventually, daughter Erin and youngest son Nicholas made the decision to apply their college degrees to other fields. During his college years at RPI and breaks in deployments, Silas was perennially involved in the company’s operations and learned daily from his parents and the long-tenured employees who watched him grow up. For him, years of helping in tasks from cleaning to field carpentry to managing complex remodels culminated in a clear goal of one day stepping into a leadership role at Schrader and Company.

It is clear to both Peter and Silas that their military backgrounds have been extremely beneficial to their professional careers, helping them acquire skills and apply developed instincts time and again in building their business and facing the challenges of everyday life. Theirs is a hard-won perspective, and the harsh realities of armed service and their sacrifice make clear what is so often easy to ignore; Life is short. You must do what you love, and do it to the very best of your abilities. This passion has helped shape Schrader and Company into the rarified small business success it is today.

Peter shaped his company with the Seabees “Can Do” motto in mind. Silas cites two specific military creeds as being especially translatable to his work with Schrader and Company: “Semper Fidelis”, meaning “always faithful”, and “Ductus Exemplo”, meaning “leadership by example”. Legions of satisfied clients can attest to the importance of faithfulness and reliability to the employees of Schrader and Company. There is no higher priority than delivering the best in quality home improvement to the customer’s complete satisfaction. Silas plans to continue the proud Schrader tradition of earning clients for life. Multiple generations of Capital Region homeowners continually turn to them to beautify and protect their life’s greatest financial investment, and all of the people of Schrader and Company take that privilege and honor very seriously.

As Silas and Ben take to the helm of the company, they will have ample opportunity to lead their skilled employees by their own example, defined by the core values that have made Schrader and Company the standard bearer for remodeling excellence in the greater Capital Region for the past forty years—quality of craftsmanship, exceptional customer service, professionalism, and integrity.

As Peter Schrader reflects on the past four decades of relationships built, goals achieved, milestones met, and now stepping into the role of mentor, he is pleased as he looks confidently to the new leaders of the company, and with immense pride in his son.

This year is a really big one for us…

celebrating_40In case you hadn’t already heard, all of us at Schrader and Company will be celebrating 40 years of improving our client’s homes throughout the greater Capital Region. In today’s world of disposable products and low quality service, it seems that both have sadly become the norm. And in some warped and desensitized way, most of us have come to accept this kind of woeful underperformance. Conversely, we look upon the things that continue to consistently deliver with great admiration and satisfaction.“Reliable” is a word that is often used when speaking about such people, products and organizations. These are the ones that stand the true test of time. And it is time that is most often the measure of reliable things. At Schrader and Company, we pride ourselves on being dependable, committed, and dedicated to our clients. Here are a few“time‐related” statistics which help to illustrate our mission:

40: the number of years we will have been in business when this October shows up on our calendars. It all began in 1973 when Peter and Christy Schrader, the founders of Schrader and Company, laid the solid foundation for our company.

18: the average number of years an employee has worked at Schrader and Company. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics’ website states that the average length of employment for a worker in our country is less than 5 years (actually4.6 years!). The fact that our company has an average over three times that tenure tells a compelling story. This is not to mention two of our employees who have been here for more than 30 years.

15: the number of dedicated professionals who work and worry about improving our client’s homes, and their lives, with as much care as we would give our own, quite often, even more.

270: the cumulative number of years of professional experience our staff has in the remodeling industry. In fact, this figure is a bit low. We actually have well over 300 years of experience between us. Without exception, we use this shared experience on a daily basis to make our products better for our clients. We consistently rely on one another for professional advice, all with our client’s best interests in mind.

40-yearsThe accomplishment of 40 successful years in business is significant and telling. It is a tremendous source of pride and accomplishment for us all.It proves to all that employ us, know us, or work alongside us that we have true staying power; even in difficult economic times. Many of you who are reading this have visited our showroom, our office, and cabinet shop here in Burnt Hills. If you haven’t yet, please do. For those of you who have, you may have noticed a small sign that is hung over our shop manager’s office door. It reads “This Company Shall Continue Forever!” For those of us here at Schrader and Company, we have absolutely no doubt that it will
