Modern Farmhouse Transformation

Modern Farmhouse Style

This Mudroom and Laundry Room project in Burnt Hills, NY is a celebration of modern farmhouse style and functional family home design.

The kitchen and mudroom were fully overhauled to move from formal Colonial architecture toward an open, warm, and inviting aesthetic. We moved the washer and dryer out of the mudroom, to a more convenient location in the home giving the parents, children, and pets room to move with ease.

Now conveniently located on the second floor, from a previously unused bonus area, we carved out a new half bath, and a laundry suite, expanding the house’s utility without expanding its footprint.

A pop of color makes a mundane task much more enjoyable. A hidden ironing board, drying rack, and storage cabinet makes keeping the space organized much easier.

The result?

This Burnt Hills home renovation delivers more than updated looks—it reimagines the way a family uses their home. Spaces feel lighter, more open, and beautifully cohesive.

Family Foyer

A mudrooms that is as elegant as it is functional.

Schrader and Company introduces a  Custom Mudroom—an elegant, expertly crafted space in East Greenbush, New York that reflects our passion for timeless design and superior craftsmanship.

This mudroom renovation was a much needed  functional transition space for a busy family managing the mess from outdoor activities, pets, and kids before entering the main living area.

Mudrooms stop mud, snow, rain, and dirt from being tracked throughout the house by providing a place to remove wet/dirty items at the door. This custom built  organization  offers a central spot for hats, coats, backpacks, sports equipment, keys, and pet leashes, preventing clutter in hallways and closets.  And the exquisite walnut bench provides a place to sit and remove shoes before entering the home.

The hexagon floor tile was carefully selected taking into consideration the needed durability of a transitional space. Never was the style compromised for the functionally.

After working with Schrader and Company on various other projects, when it came time to update our mudroom, we knew who to call.

More than Just a Mudroom

A Custom Mudroom Designed to Bring Order, Style, and Flow

Schrader and Company presents a custom-designed mudroom and entry space, thoughtfully integrated into a whole-home renovation in Greater Saratoga, New York.

This mudroom was only part of a much larger whole house renovation project to take a treasured family home into the next generation. The goal was to create a more open floor plan and inviting main living area. This mudroom renovation was designed to bring order, durability, and understated style to one of the home’s hardest-working spaces. A clean, neutral palette creates a bright and welcoming entry, while shiplap wall paneling adds texture and a timeless architectural element.

Durable flooring ensures the space can withstand daily wear from shoes, pets, and seasonal weather, while the nearby steps create a natural transition between living spaces. Natural light from the window enhances the room’s airy feel, making the mudroom both practical and inviting.

Thoughtfully placed wall hooks provide easy access for coats, pet leashes, and everyday essentials, keeping items off the floor and within reach. A built-in bench with open storage below offers a convenient spot for putting on shoes, with space underneath to neatly organize footwear and grab-and-go items. The warm wood bench top introduces contrast and warmth against the crisp white millwork.

The homeowner now enjoys a beautiful space that honors the past while meeting the needs of their future.

Taking the Chore Out of Laundry

Schrader and Company presents an elevated Laundry Room renovation.  An impeccably crafted space in Burnt Hills, New York that transforms a daily routine into a refined experience through timeless design and exceptional craftsmanship.

Laundry is a daily task, and when a space isn’t designed to support it, the work can quickly feel overwhelming. For this project, our goal was to take the chore out of laundry by transforming a purely utilitarian room into a thoughtfully designed space that simplifies routines and adds comfort to everyday life. By improving layout, enhancing storage, and incorporating durable, easy-to-maintain finishes, we created a laundry room that feels organized, efficient, and surprisingly enjoyable to use—proof that even the most functional spaces deserve smart design.

This laundry renovation was designed to transform a purely functional space into one that feels organized, efficient, and enjoyable to use. From the layout to the finishes, every detail was selected to simplify daily routines while elevating the overall look of the room.

A key design feature is the barn door, which allows the space to be easily closed off when not in use without sacrificing valuable floor clearance. Its clean, streamlined look keeps the room feeling open while providing flexibility and visual separation from adjacent living areas. A clothes hanging rod was also discreetly incorporated into the custom cabinetry to allow a space for delicate drying.

The wallpaper also adds a layer of personality and visual interest that transforms the room from purely functional to thoughtfully styled. Its subtle pattern and warm tones add depth and movement, creating a curated backdrop that complements the custom cabinetry and refined finishes. Rather than overwhelming the space, the wallpaper brings balance and softness, proving that even hardworking rooms can.

The result?

The final result is a laundry room that blends smart functionality with thoughtful design—proving that even the most hardworking spaces can be both beautiful and highly efficient.

A Treasure Trove of Inspiration for Modern Family Living

This Project Spotlight is chock full of innovative design details, space-maximizing transformations, and organizational ideas designed to inspire!

This renovation was very extensive in that we touched a majority of the house. The main goal of the kitchen / mudroom portion of the project was to update the existing Colonial style to a Modern Farmhouse design style, while improving functionality and flow.

We removed all the kitchen and mudroom cabinetry, countertops, and appliances. We also removed the washer and dryer from the mudroom to increase its size and utility for the parents, children, and pets of the very busy family. A new half bath, laundry room, and work-out / multi-purpose room were built in an existing bonus space.

Any kitchen renovation creates some inconvenience for the homeowners during construction. Happily, we were able to provide a temporary basement kitchen, eating area, and laundry in the interim to minimize the impact on daily life for our clients.

We specified a number of selections that created the updated aesthetic the client was going for. We replaced the existing builder’s grade elliptical transom window with an updated Andersen 400 series unit with a rectangular transom above the sink. We included new natural slate tile in the mudroom, garage entrance, and a marble mosaic tile in the existing first powder room. The rest of the first floor received new wide plank engineered hardwood flooring throughout. We used a gorgeous Kohler “Whitehaven” Farm sink accented with a Kohler “Purist” Semi-professional pull down faucet in brushed bronze. The accompanying InSinkErator “Modern” reverse osmosis faucet in “Brushed Bronze” complemented the space nicely.

We used many natural materials such as a white marble backsplash accenting the honed black soapstone at the perimeter cabinets. To offset the expansive perimeter cabinetry, we fabricated the large island from quarter sawn oak in a light stain and topped it with a light quartzite top. To add interest, a custom curved exhaust hood and honey bronze knobs and pulls were incorporated, as well as antique brass wire mesh inlaid on some of the doors. We used a number of the same series of fixtures and hardware in the mudroom and laundry, but mixed it up with black finishes and MSI quartz tops. For durability and ease of maintenance, wide plank luxury vinyl floor was installed in the laundry, half bath, and multi-purpose room.

When making design choices for projects, it is always our goal to find innovative space-maximizing solutions, and create conveniences that align with the clients’ lifestyle. In trying to keep the sink centered at the window, we had to get creative with the cabinet layout and incorporated a “blind corner” cabinet. We added an “optimizer” to allow the client to use as much of the cabinet as possible. The homeowners do a lot of cooking, and making sure we had a large range top with multiple burners and plenty of drawer space for pots/pans storage along with utensils and spices was very important in the design. The homeowners tend to hang dry lots of laundry, so we incorporated a hanging rod and hanging drawer. We were also able to install a wall mounted ironing board, and order a door to match the rest of the cabinetry.

No detail was overlooked when it came to this renovation. We strove to make all of the spaces feel connected without being adjacent. The cabinet color in the kitchen and mudroom were the same “Accessible Beige” by Sherwin Williams, and the bench top in the mudroom matches the accented island cabinetry. While the laundry room was upstairs, it still felt connected  to the kitchen and mudroom.

The transformation is nothing short of dramatic. The homeowners were very engaged from the beginning in the design and selections process, and were a big part in making the project their own. When you walk through the home, you see first-hand what a drastic change occurred, and that we truly achieved the clients’ vision.  All of the spaces feel lighter, brighter, more open, and absolutely beautiful.
